Establish A Family Meeting Place

Your family may be scattered to the four winds when an emergency strikes, and there’s a good possibility cellphones won’t work. It’s prudent to plan a meeting location to prepare for disaster.
Of course, the first and most logical choice for a meeting place is the home. But, depending on the nature of the disaster, it might not be feasible to meet there. Establish several alternate locations with clear instructions about which one is to be used depending upon circumstances.
Good choices for alternate locations include:

• A church, school or prominent building in the community.
• A significant landmark a little farther away.
• The home of a relative within a day’s walk.

If you are forced to abandon your home and are unable to contact missing family members, leave a note indicating your destination. If you want to keep your destination secret from outsiders, establish a code word for your alternate locations.
If there are rescue or disaster relief agency workers in the area, leave information about your destination with them and let them know which family members you expect to show up. Finally, choose a person outside your local area as a contact person and make sure all family members know who that person is and how to contact him.
The key is to make a plan that covers all the scenarios you can think of and make sure all your family members are well-versed in the plan.
